Database Management System (DBMS) refers to a set of computer programs in a software package specifically designed for the creation, maintenance, and use of databases by following appropriate security measures.

The database management system acts as an intermediate between the database and the end-user or third-party software. It establishes a multi-user environment allowing multiple users to create, access, or manipulate data in the database in parallel.

In this article, we explain some real-time applications of DBMS. However, they are not limited to just these applications or uses. There can be many more applications/uses of DBMS in different fields for specific database requirements.

What are the applications of DBMS?

Due to the significant advantages, the use of database management systems is very common in various sectors, be it education, banking, telecommunications, defense, industry, etc. We can also say that the applications of the database management system are countless.

Following are some of the essential applications of DBMS in real life based on various fields:

Railway Reservation System

DBMS plays an important role in the railway reservation system. It helps in managing the database for storing customer data like name, mobile number, booking status, departure and arrival stations, etc.

Similarly, data like arrival and departure times of trains, schedules, seating arrangements for vacant seats, etc. is also stored in the database. In any case, if trains are delayed or canceled, users are notified through database updates.

Airline Reservation System

Like Railway Reservation System, Airline Reservation System also uses DBMS to keep or maintain records of users and details of flights in the database.

Education

Online exams are quite common these days. Therefore, universities, colleges, and examination boards take advantage of DBMS to keep or update data like registration details of students, fee payment, exam centers, exam results, etc. in the database.

Apart from examinations, schools and universities also maintain databases to store the available courses, personal records of students, attendance, grades or results, and many other details.

Library Management System

Libraries hold thousands of books and keeping records of books in physical registers or copies can be very difficult. Hence, DBMS has become a part of the library management system, which enables the management to maintain book records like availability, date of issue, book name, author name, book issuer, book taker name, etc. in databases.

It is very easy to check or search specific book records from the database using DBMS.

Banking

Banking is considered one of the primary applications of databases. Banks have to maintain millions of user accounts and DBMS helps in keeping the records of each user systematically. Additionally, other baking data like day-to-day transactions, loans, fixed deposits, balance sheets, interest credits, ATM records, etc., everything is maintained with the help of database management systems.

Credit Card Transactions

Purchases made through credit card or credit card transaction details are also maintained using DBMS. The database management system helps to keep the information secure and also eases the creation of monthly or yearly statements.

Social Media Sites

With the advent of smartphones, the use of social media sites has increased a lot. Using these sites, people communicate with their friends, family, or relatives from all over the world. Thousands to millions of accounts are created daily on popular social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, TikTok, etc.

All the records are stored and managed securely and systematically in databases with the help of DBMS.

Industry

In the industry, there are many employees and their records are maintained using database systems. Apart from this, inventory management in big industries is also done with DBMS.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing companies manufacture a large number of related products on a daily basis. They need to maintain a record of all the ins and outs of products, quantities, purchases, payments, invoices, workers’ data, etc. All this is possible with DBMS which helps in maintaining or updating all the required records in the database.

Telecom

The database is one of the essential requirements in the telecom sectors to store the records of call details, network usage, subscriber information, subscription package details, bill payments, etc. It is very difficult for telecom companies to keep or maintain such huge data without DBMS.

Broadcast Communication

Broadcasting involves the distribution of audio and/or video signals to a large number of users or subscribers. Generally, broadcast communication is done for public users like TV (television), online streaming, internet-based media, etc.

Records of events, timings and schedules, and subscribers’ details such as personal information, payment status, subscription packages are all stored in the database with the DBMS.

Accounting & Finance

These days, records related to accounting and finance are not stored in physical registers, especially when big data is maintained. Instead, such records are kept in the database using a DBMS, making it easily accessible. Everything like sales, finance statements, purchase of financial assets, purchase or sale of stocks or bonds, etc., are stored with the database system.

Defense

Keeping records of soldiers has become very easy with the help of DBMS in the defense sector. Apart from this, there are many files or confidential data that need to be kept safe. DBMS helps to keep information secure. With DBMS, it is also easy to search or find any specific information about any soldier or other record.

Online Shopping

Online shopping or ordering has become popular these days. One can order most of the items without wasting time from home using e-commerce sites. DBMS helps in keeping records of purchase information, payment, invoice bill, order status, etc. In addition, e-commerce sites and other online platforms take advantage of DBMS to store customer data, maintain stock, prices, etc.

Sales & Marketing

Database systems also help manage sales and marketing data. For example, customer information, dealer information, list of products, items bought and sold, invoices, etc.

Human Resource Management

Big firms and multinational companies hire many employees to get their work done. Human Resource Management keeps and manages the records like name, designation, timetable, salary, tax, etc., of the employees. DBMS helps to manage all such information in databases securely.

Medical

In medical, DBMS helps in keeping the record of medicines and updating the list accordingly. Additionally, other details such as patient records, appointments, payments, invoices, doctor schedules, and other information are also stored or managed in databases in real-time using DBMS.

Agriculture

In the agriculture sector, DBMS helps in keeping records of crops, fertilizers, machinery, and livestock within the database. The buy rate, sell rate, cash usage, etc., can also be updated in the database.

Summary

This article discusses more than 15 applications or uses of database management systems in real life. With each new technology arriving in the current computational era, it will have more and more uses in the days to come. The database management system has made it very easy to keep or update day-to-day records in different fields/ sectors.
