Doha, October 31 (QNA) – The Iraqi legend and Qatar Legacy Ambassador Younis Mahmoud said that Al Janoub stadium, one of the 8 FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums, which was designed by the late Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, is a unique architect masterpiece and is claimed with pride by millions of Iraqis all over the world.
On the 72 birthday anniversary of the global architect who made a qualitative leap in the arts of architecture around the world, the former Iraqi player stressed that millions of Iraqis around the world are proud of the World Cup edifice created by the Iraqi Zaha Hadid, who has several dazzling imprints and innovative edifices in many countries, and whose designs have won wide fame around the globe.
In an interview, published on the website of Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, during his tour in Al Janoub stadium, Younis Mahmoud said: “In my opinion, Al Janoub is an Iraqi stadium.
Although Iraq didnt qualify for the World Cup, Iraqis are proud to have this beautiful stadium designed by an Iraqi architect. They see it as personifying their contribution to the first World Cup in the Arab world.”
The 40,000-capacity stadiums captivating design reflects the wind-filled sails of Qatars traditional dhow boats in tribute to Al Wakrahs seafaring heritage.
The Qatar Legacy Ambassador added that the stadium is distinguished by astonishing engineering creativity and the first stadium to be entirely built specifically to host FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. He said that they have always wonder if they will see a more innovative sporting edifice than Al Janoub stadium with its amazing design and distinctive colors. The stadium features the blue colors of the seashore and is a perfect reflection of what the city has to offer.
The Iraqi star and former player of Al Wakrah SC added that he still holds sweet memories of the city and has strong friendships with its people. He said:
“I have so many beautiful memories of Al Wakrah. Having played in the city, and in Qatar for so long, Ive made so many friends along the way and got to know the area very well.”
Regarding the experience awaiting the fans upon visiting Qatar to attend the FIFA World Cup, he said that Al Wakrah, and Qatar in general, is rich in various scenic natural areas and tourist attractions and will guarantee fans splendid moments.
He added that “Fans who witness this architectural masterpiece will experience everything that Al Wakrah and the surrounding area has to offer. This includes the old market, similar to Souq Waqif, the Doha Corniche, and even the sand dunes of Sealine, which are only 45 minutes away.”
Qatar 2022 will be the most compact edition of the tournament in modern history, with the longest distance between stadiums just 75km. Al Janoub Stadium, located 22 km south of central Doha, will be connected by a robust transportation system.
Surrounding Al Janoub Stadium are recreational facilities that will serve the community long after the tournament ends. These including parks, running tracks and local eateries.
Younis Mahmoud also said: “This stadium will leave a long-lasting legacy for the community and the Al Wakrah football team. For fans attending matches here during the World Cup, they will be awestruck by the beauty of a stadium designed by a remarkable architect.

Al Janoub Stadium will host seven matches during this years FIFA World Cup, starting with the Group D clash between reigning champions France and Australia on Nov. 22.
