Doha, November 16 (QNA) – The Qatar Company for Airport Operation and Management (MATAR) announced Wednesday that Hamad International Airport (HIA) has been awarded with the International Standards Organization ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification.
The achievement of the ISO14001:2015 certificate for Hamad International Airport, from international standards body BSI Group, marks a key milestone in the implementation of MATARS long term environmental goals.

Badr Mohammed Al Meer, remarked: “Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at HIA, so we are very proud to be awarded this international accreditation. Over the last few years, we have taken significant steps to reduce our energy and water demand, reduce waste and recycle waste, so this latest achievement will help to launch our ambition as environmental leaders within the aviation industry.”
ISO 14001 is the business improvement standard that guides organizations in implementing a robust environmental management system. By achieving the ISO 14001 certification, MATAR added another building block to their strategy, underlying the organization’s goal to remain commercially successful and at the same time driving a responsible and sustainable environmental agenda.
Congratulations on the achievement! Theuns Kotze – Managing Director, BSI IMETA Region.
BSI Groups assessment thoroughly examined all elements of HIAs day-to-day operational activities, including water use, energy, emissions and waste management.
The certification will further pave the way for the roll-out of MATARs Environmental management system across its airports. Through a key focus on waste reduction and recycling, energy and water optimization, and emissions reduction HIA continues to prioritize sustainability at the core of its operations.
Since its inception in 2014, HIA has won many accolades and has achieved a number of ISO certifications including Asset Management, Business Continuity Management and IT Service Management. MATAR is also accredited by Airports Council International as Level 3 Environmental Management. In 2022, the airport was once again named the Worlds Best Airport for the second year in a row by the prestigious Skytrax awards. As the Official Airport Partner of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 , the facility looks set to welcome millions of passengers from across the globe to an extraordinary destination right in the heart of the Middle East.
