Doha, November 16 (QNA) – Qatar University (QU) holds a virtual conference aiming to examine energy transition in the MENA region from a legal, institutional, and policy perspective through the lens of UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 focusing on ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy.
This conference was organized by QUs College of Law under the title of “Ensuring Access to Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable and Modern Energy in the MENA Region: Beyond COP27.” The conference focused on current developments, international cooperation initiatives and investments in infrastructure and technologies related to the topic.
Dean of the College of Law Dr. Talal Al Emadi said during the conference that the importance of energy debates lies in a number of aspects, especially in terms of their timing and topics that address the shifts in energy markets in the Middle East and North Africa. He added that the question of energy governance has been subject to deep analysis and dialogue, debated under legal themes and from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Al Emadi remarked that the Arab world is seeking to address and limit pollution and climate change, which according to expectations, will increasingly affect Arab countries, pointing to what some countries in the Arab world are experiencing of record-breaking temperatures, while others are suffering from water scarcity and extreme weather patterns.
Dr. Talal Al Emadi also noted that energy governance is extensively debated today and is expected to remain so for the foreseeable future. Al Emadi elaborated that various organizations have been established globally to respond to challenges posed by this phenomenon, such as the International Energy Agency and the International Renewable Energy Agency.
