Manama, February 01 (QNA) – The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) officially announced today that Saudi Arabia has won the right to host the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
This came during the meeting of the 33rd AFC Congress which was held today in Manama, during which HE President of the Qatar Football Association Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Thani was elected today a member of the FIFA Council until 2027.
This will be the first time for Saudi Arabia to host the Asian continent’s highest tournament since the launch of its first-ever competitions in 1956.
Saudi Arabia was the only candidate for the hosting of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, after Uzbekistan, Iran and India’s withdrew their hosting bids.
The country was the Asian champion for 3 times in: 1984, 1988 and 1996, yet it has never hosted the tournament.
Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) President Yasser Al Misehal expressed in a statement his happiness that Saudi Arabia was chosen as the host of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, adding that Saudi Arabia has a great history in this tournament, having won it three times before, stressing however that the focus now is on the future and on developing the game.
Al Misehal added that it gives him a lot of pride that Saudi Arabia got AFC and member associations’ trust, asserting that Saudi Arabia is ready to organize a tournament that will linger in memory.
On the other hand, the State of Qatar received the honor of organizing the next edition of the tournament. (QNA)
