Doha, February 03 (QNA) – The Ninth Edition of the Sports Tournament for GCC Universities and Higher Education Institutes organized by Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) will start on Saturday at Aspire Zone Foundation until Feb. 10.
The opening ceremony, which will be held at 6:00 pm, will witness a large participation of representatives of delegations, distinguished guests, and visitors. The official competitions will start at 7:00 pm, with group stage matches in volleyball. Ten teams divided into two groups will participate in the competition.
471 students representing 15 universities and higher education institutions in the GCC countries will take part in this edition, and will compete in six sports: football, volleyball, table tennis, Padel, athletics, and swimming.
The football competition includes 11 teams divided into two groups, while 9 teams in Padel event divided into three groups. Finally the table tennis competition will include 7 teams divided into two groups.
Sports and Recreation Activities Supervisor at HBKU Student Affairs Wadha Al Saud noted the importance of the 9th of the GCC Sports Tournament for Universities and Higher Education Institutes as it contributes to the rapprochement and acquaintance of students in various Gulf countries.
Director of the Tournament Faisal bin Ahmed Al Mohannadi affirmed the readiness of HBKU to host the tournament in all aspects, indicating that the university’s goal of hosting is to strengthen brotherly relations between the people of the GCC states from various universities and higher education institutions.
Al Mohannadi stressed that this tournament is an opportunity to acquaint GCC youth with the great development witnessed by the State of Qatar in terms of sports, facilities and infrastructure, especially with the country hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 for the first time in the Middle East and the Arab world.
