Doha, January 05 (QNA) – President of Qatar Fencing and Weightlifting Federation (QFWF) and Asian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) Mohammed Yousef Al Mana said he was riding high with his being voted in as AWF president for a third term, voicing hopes he would contribute to fostering the sport across Asia.
Speaking exclusively to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Al Mana ascribed the AWF members’ confidence to the international community’s confidence in the Qatari administrative potentials, and their appreciation for the success of his policy as AWF president over the past period, which saw the game achieving progress across the continent.
Al Mana hailed the support he received from the Qatar Olympic Committee, chaired by HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, ascribing the victory to the State of Qatar’s cumulative achievements at the global sports level.
He highlighted the Asian weightlifters’ significant development and international achievements over the past two decades, highlighting Asian weightlifters’ monopoly of gold in the last four straight Olympic Games.
AWF needs to continue continental work to develop the game in the member states, given the game’s Olympic status, he said.
Commenting on the West Asian Weightlifting Championships and the Qatar Cup Weightlifting Championships, recently organized by the Qatar Federation, Al Mana said they were strong and produced promising talents that will shine in the near future, voicing hopes that these talents will be cared for by their countries.
He added that Qatar includes a group of male and female weightlifters who need more work in order to excel globally, pointing out that the federation will provide them with the appropriate conditions for development during the coming period by providing them with trial matches with world champions.
